I just built a new gaming rig and incidently stumbled upon the BFG 9500GT graphics card. As I was shelling out for all my other compents I thought this was a quality budget video card and reviews I came across seemed positive enough so I bought it.
Now with the card in place I was in for some great framerates at good quality, and it turns out not to be up to the likes of Cysis and GTA IV without stuttering. BUT what really gets me is that the benchmark review for GTA IV stated that the average graphics memory used was 47%! What about the other 53%? If that was used I imagine the framerate would be much better. So is there some way I can unleash more power from this card? Bearing in mind I have updated drivers. Overclocking the thing is an option but I have tried this with an 8600GT and it started wierd visual displays, so any tips on overclocking the GPU would also be appreciated.

At the graphics settings and resolution, it probably didn't have anything to fill the rest of the memory.
The best way to get better performance is to ditch that 9500gt and buy a new card. The Radeon 48xx series are very, very cheap now and would give you epic amounts more power.

Nah Artas1984, its got 1gb of DDR2 memory onboard. And I was looking for another card on Amazon.co.uk and found this one. I checked out the cards website and they biggit-up massively http://www.bfgtech.com/bfgr951024gte.aspx . An expensive mistake on my part. So this card ain't broke so I can't claim on warranty, lets see if I can squeeze more power out while maintaining a decent stability. Any overclocking suggestions welcome..

The performance issues aren't related to what's in the memory, it's down to the power of the GPU to process information. There is no point filling the memory if it can't process it quickly enough.
Also, at low quality/resolution, there is less information to be processed, so less memory filled.

Use evga precision or riva tuner to OC it.l And use furmark or ATI tool to check for artifacts.
On my cards i can at least get like 7% performance boost by OC'n

Getting a 9500GT with 1Gb of video RAM is the same as pairing a Athlon XP with 16Gb RAM; i.e. A waste.
Overclock it as high as you can and next time ask us for an idea of what to get for a system.

Understood guys, marketings a powerful thing to the uninformed consumer. I now have evga precision and I am ready to attempt to boost my gpu, I'm going to go steady though I don't want to total it.
Like I said it looks like a used HD4890 is hanging in the balance for half the retail price, I've seen it working (although not benchmarked as yet), and the reviews are generally positive.

Yea, that's why our sort of forums exist, to break through corporate BS'ing, hype and jargon and provide real, down to earth advice.
If you need a new card, make a thread with your current system and budget and we will deliver

Thanks alex98uk.
I OCed my gpu as follows: Core clock: 650 mhz (thats a 100mhz increase) Shader clock: 1800 mhz (+400mhz) Its too high at the moment, Crysis had alot of artifacts flying around. The desktop is ok though it doesnt count when it really isnt graphics intensive, but still I havnt broken it
