the 295 may be faster now by a few fps coz of its premature drivers used by the reviewers, but once the full potential of the 5870 is unleashed, it'll be a different story.
also, if you care about pure performance, the 5870x2 is just around the corner.

nothing in the nvidia arsenal is currently a better buy than what can offer. if you to remain unbelievably loyal to nvidia, i suggest you wait for the gtx300 series.

There are few things I disagree with you. Firstly the op said the price was the same. Scaling also have to be stated in context, though I'm sure you meant when it's compared to quad sli. Also when two are in xfire, it does not use less energy than a single 295 (it is similar in energy consumption at load). However it is the most efficient single gpu card amongst top dogs.

The best choice: ATI 5870

Pro
- faster when compared to the gtx 275 (gtx 295 in non sli mode)
- higher minimum FPS in many games compared to the gtx 295
- faster when xfired compared to the gtx 295 (and prolly quad sli as well)
- handles AA better than gtx 295
- tri monitor (or more) gaming support
Con
- cost more when comparing 2 ati 5870 vs 1 nvidia 295
- ati not known to be great folders

To the OP: You should buy dependent on your gaming needs only. The pricing in Aus has yet to reflect the benefits of ATI pricing in NA yet. Over here there is no doubt 5870 is the most logical choice.

I'd go for single gpu rather then dual gpu. With the performance being close to the same, a single gpu will give u performance in older games where there us no sli/xfire.....

you misunderstood me. of course it's 5870 in crossfire vs gtx295 in quad sli. and why would he go for 2 5870s when one already compares to a 295?

This...

I'm not buying ANYTHING right now. My board only supports SLi so I wanna see what nVidia releases, how good it is, how much it is, etc. If it sucks or is too expensive, I'll probably go 5870 a little later on when it's cheaper.

Well to tell you truth right now I would not upgrade because Nvidia's DX11 cards are not out yet and if rumours are true they will be pretty damn fast.

If I had the choice to have either card. As in either with the same price or free or something like that I would choose the GTX 295.

1) Because I still don't see anything in DX11 that blows DX10 away. I don't really need to see what's under the textures as it has been shown in some DX11 demos. I mean once the texture is applied to the image what's underneath you don't see it. Plus so far how many DX11 games are out? If we still have a lot of DX9 games out well it will be a while before DX11 becomes mainstream.

2) The GTX 295 is still faster and well if ATI can do Magic and make their card 20% faster in all games then I guess the 5870 will indeed be the winner in performance too but seeing how a 4870x2 was never able to beat a GTX 295 in performance it makes me doubt that 5870 will.

3) PhysX, Folding, CUDA, more games optimized for Nvidia etc...

That's if I really wanted a card right now or if it was given to me as a choice. But personally I would wait to see the NV DX11 cards first. However in my case since I have a GTX 285, for me SLI will beat any of the 2 and is the best upgrade in my case.

The GTX 295 is still on top but for the best bang for the buck ---> 5870.
