Default PCI E 2.0 and upgrades

So, I want to build an i7 build and priced it out to $1500. Now I'm figuring I could save a good bit if I built late spring next year and just upgraded for now. My Mobo only has PCI-E 16x 1.0. Would a PCI-E 16x 2.0 card be backward compatible but scaled down? I couldn't find any decent PCI-E 1.0 cards on newegg. But anyways, I figure I could spend $150 or so on a new GPU and some more ram (I have 1gb now). Then there is the Athalon 64 3000 I have for a CPU... Would that bottleneck me horribly?

Thanks OCN.

Your CPU might be a bit of a bottleneck, but then, there's always a bottleneck in a system. (Bottleneck being the slowest part).

It's the same as PCI-E 2.0 x8, which some motherboards still do.

The Intel P45 Chipset does x8 CrossFire.

Edit: To be honest, a 4670 would be a good card for you, and it's fairly cheap. Are you using DDR2 RAM?

i am using a pcie card on a pcie 1.0 slot. works fine. from online benchmarks it seems that you lose some performance from a high end videocard these days on a 1.0 slot. but its only less than 5%.

To answer the ram question, I'm still on DDR. I built the system as a budget build 3-4 years ago, before DDR2 was prevalent. Iv been figuring that the prices on the new ATI 5670 will drop in a few months, and the new i9 CPU will drop the i7 prices If I can wait for spring to build my new system.
