Default which is better 1xhd 5870 or 2xGTX 285

hi there guys,
right now I'm using my two GTX 285s but I though I would consider switching to the hd5870 because of Direct X 11, the multi display ability, and because a single graphics card is always more stable. Now the question with performance. Which one of these setups will perform better in high graphic games like crysis or far cry 2? also will the new drivers that ati will release for the hd 5870 improve its performance by a lot?

I realize one card is quite a bit faster, but I don't recall seeing anything where it's faster than 2 285's. I'd still probably go with the 5870 if you wanted something new NOW, but I'd wait for GT300 if I were you. Also, I'm not sure what's so great about this multi monitor support. They can already run two monitors, and it's not like you'll be playing many games at decent graphics on three monitors (or more)

If you run Vista or 7, you cannot run 3D games on more than 1 monitor because Microsoft disabled span. Besides Eyefinity, you would have to get a Matrox Triple Head to play on more than 1 monitor and that is very expensive. So if you have a game like FSX, you could not play on multiple monitors. A single 5870 and later cards are already as fast as a 4870x2/GTX295. In the future, it will be definitely be feasible to play on multiple monitors at high frame rates.

3x 5770 should just about equal your 2x 285's if you sold them and xfired with the 5770's youd make a nice profit, and save on your power bill.

also, i dont understand how the fsck you are running your cards in sli on that board.... holy crap how do i mix up your system with a system in a whole-nother THREAD.

This. ATI is working on new drivers that completely shut off any extra graphics cards when doing 2D. So only your primary graphics card will be on, which idles only at 18 watts if you have a 5000 series. This will be good for the environment and energy if you have a multiple graphics card computer.

two 285s will be generally faster than a single 5870 by quite a margin but won't be that efficient.

285s in a dual config would usually scale at a max of 60%. and as of the moment the 5870 is about 25-30% faster than a 285 even without any official driver support. and usually newly released ati cards with their official driver support usually boosts a lot.

i owned a 4830 and the difference between the bundled driver and a four-month updated driver was huge! around 35% i think. just imagine the potential of that card.

nVidia representative: PhysX, as seen in next-gen games like Batman:Arkham Asylum, PhysX makes your g200 based card BETTER than the 58XX series in all aspects. You'd be an idiot to buy ATI when you'd be forfeiting physX
