Interesting... How well do ATI cards OC, anyways? And what software does one use for ATI OCs?

Anyways I currently have an 8800gts (the 512mb one) that my bestfriend gave me to replace my 8800gts 640mb card. I really do not need the best of the best but am totally new to ati cards, BUT seeing as how the 4890 is right in the middle of the gtx 260 and gtx 275, how can I not consider it? Especially when the SAPPHIRE Vapor-X 4890 is around the same price as the gtx 260.

But I am upgrading to windows 7 soon and as it supports dx11, why not get a dx11 card? But after seeing this: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...70,2446-7.html - it shows the 5770 (only affordable dx11 card at the moment) performing worse than the 4890, so why upgrade to the 5770 and not to the 4890? I dont need top of the line but want to keep the card around for a while if I can help it.

Lastly I dont need or want two cards, so anything sli or x2/crossfired (whatever they call it) is out of the question.

Ideas? Advice?

So I found out (after talking to ma buddy ) that the 5770 is ~$50 cheaper, and has the exact same specs as the 4890.

So I might just end up going with the 5770, and get it for Christmas.

Well it depends, all cards are different after all. But in a general sense the 4890's overclock fairly well. A lot of people have been able to reach 1ghz core clock. In the long run you will be MUCH happier with the 4890's performance, period.

And as for overclocking cards, I always used ATItool for overclocking my laptops x600 lol...poor thing needs a little more kick

OP, 4890 over the GTX 260 without question, but I'd also consider getting a 5770 now and adding a 2nd for crossfire later.

5770CF keeps on par with a 5870, and while it still may be less raw power than 4890CF there are numerous benefits to going the 58xx route (TDP, cost, DX11, etc)

Ninja Edit:

Haven't personally dealt w 5770, but I can say the 4890 OCs like a bear. My reference Sapphire clocked to 975/1135 (4540) on stock volts.

Ya, If your willing to pay I'd wait for the 300's. If not, try getting a 4870 x2.

EDIT: my experiences with XFX have only been superior.

Well I have been researching it and it seems the 4890 has more frames in game benchmarks than the 5770

The 5770 is not $50 cheaper, nor does it have the same specs as a 4890. The only thing it has is DX11 over the 4890.

You need to stop asking this friend for advice, he's very ill informed.

I am curious to test how well the 4890 can do with some dx11 work, as it does have the ability to do tessellation, as most ati cards do.

Taken from NewEgg. Not my friend.

He only said that the 5770 was ~$50 cheaper, which it is

Microsoft says the tessellation that the pre-5xxx series cards utilize is not compatible with DX11 tessellation. Apparently, at least.

Not as simple as that. AMD says the Terascale 2 architecture relies less on memory bandwidth (proven here). Also, the 5770 has higher speed GDDR5 than the 4890.

But, overall, the 4890 does have higher memory bandwidth.
