Default Switch GPU's whilst in standby?

So should it work? the machine is running XP BTW...

I want to try it with my 4870 and 4850...

I have two rigs setup atm and unfortunately the rig i want the 4850 in will just not boot with it....i get an error beep and thats it...it will boot just fine with the 4870 so i am somewhat confused...i know the gpu's in all of the way etc and the fault lights on the 4850 come on like they are supposed for a split second(that IS supposed to happen) and then nothing...no fault lights from the GPU or any other info/sign that gives me anywhere to start on fixing the "problem"..

What i was thinking i'd do is boot that PC up with the 4870 in it then put it in standby...unplug the 4870 then plug my 4850 up along with its two attached fans then wake the pc up..

Would it be safe to at least attempt this?

No! No! No!

Never touch the inside of the computer when it's nothing less then off and the power cable it out. There is power still running through that machine and you could cause a short and destroy one or more of your hardware. What's wrong with just unplugging it completely?

I knew in the back of my mind when i threw this thread up that it would most likely not work since power still runs...

Did you read the post? booting it won't work

No way. There is power running through it and it will f up epically. Only do that in Shut Down or Hibernate, preferably with the PSU switched off at the back and/or the power cable unplugged.

HA i forgot to ask about hibernate...could i hibernate it and then try...when you boot from hibernation does it jump straight back into windows or do i have to pass bios first?

don't even do it in hibernating mode. if the card you wanna test doesn't work when you boot it as regular, then the card is damaged, you could try to boot with both cards and check with gpuz and such to see if it recognizes both cards, if it does, you might be able to flash the "broken" card and that should fix its boot issues.

yeah it has to pass BIOS first... the BIOS is what loads the OS. Hibernate simply saves everything in the RAM to the hard drive, so it restores exactly the way you had it.

The card is not broken...this rig simply won't allow the 4850 to boot in it...it has worked fine with my 9800GTX/260GTX/4870...

It's the board...the 4850 runs just fine on the other rig...

That i did not want to hear...ahwell...

I guess the 4870 is stuck with a 2.5Ghz X2/2GB's Ram and the 4850 is stuck on my 3.2Ghz X2/4GB's Ram...sooo unbalanced...
