Default Recommend a video card

My co worker is on a very limited upgrade budget of $150 so I need the best bang for buck.

He currently has a
Athlon X2 (2.0Ghz)
8800GS 340MB
2GB RAM
Biostar TForce TF520-A2 mobo

He wants to upgrade the cpu and gpu. He games at 1440x900 mainly playing source mods and a few other games like COD4.

I think we are going with the Athlon 64 X2 6000+ (3.0GHz) $55 so we need a video card that will be a good bang for the buck upgrade for $100. I'm thinking either a 4850 or GTS 250. Any other suggestions?

Both of those are great cards for the price. I have a pair of GTS250s and am very happy with them. I also owned a 4850 and liked it too. Xfired 4830s are a great setup as well.

A used 4850 or 4870 would be perfect for that build ! Good Luck

Both are great although GTS250 have very small prevail over the 4850 in test carried out in the net. Whichever you buy you'll not regret.

Opinion: I have the 8800gs, overclocked of course. This video card will suffice for almost anything AT 1440x900 res. Anything higher and you will want a better card.

The 250 will NOT be that much more performance. It is just a relabeled 9800gtx (I think gtx series) My o/c 8800gs stomps my pals non-o/c 250gts. And I run at 1680x1050.

I say go for that 6000+ and for another 2gb of ram.

This is exactly what I told him but figured I'd post up to get opinions. He is not worried about eye candy, only a smooth frame rate.

Budget is $150 for cpu and gpu if he goes that route, he won't buy a $150 card. His cpu really needs an upgrade the most.
