I currently am able to pick up a GTX285 for $200... but I can probably get a 4870X2 for around $240. Which one should I go for?

4870X2 is the faster card but what resolution will you be on?

I was at 1680x1050 and my 4870x2 could max out anything and play super smooth..naturally i would recommend that, but im sure the gtx 285 at the res will max anything too. Personally id go with the X2 because its pretty much equal to the 5870 in performance, although that will probably change with newer drivers but its still a monster of a card.

It's better to have a single card, 4870x2 will sure be faster but it'll produce more heat and if your game doesn't support CF, only 1 4870 will work(I might be wrong).

in my opinion you should just get a 4890 1GB. the 4870x2 is not as smooth in some games despite being more powerful and its noisy on load. a single card solution usually yields smoother game play and less glitches
I went from a gtx285 to a 4870x2 and now I am at a 4890. the 4890 will be the best bang for buck and I speak from experience. (our rigs are more or less the same, my motherboard uses the same chipset as the p5b deluxe)
