I have an old spare 3870 and was wondering is there is a way to connect to computer and use just for folding?

You can connect as many video cards as you have places to plug them in.
But you have to run all the cards off of the same driver, as you can't have two different video drivers loaded at the same time. That being said, there are some combinations of video drives that will play nicely together. So it depends on what your other card(s) are.

You can run a 3870 with a 5870, and you should be able to specify which card you want to fold on.
