I remember a few years ago when I was shopping for an inexpensive card I was told to get a card with at least 256 bit.
__________________Now I see many people saying that the HD 5770 with 128 bits is a very good card that's as fast as some of the cards with a higher bit. And that's where I get lost. I need to get a new card and can afford it in a couple of weeks. Don't need anything spectacular, like the 58xx, but a good solid performer for a family/soho environment. My wife is working on her masters and we both like to listen to music online while we browse or work online. We watch videos too. Not too much into gaming. Just a few puzzle type games. So what's the answer. Is 128 bit as good as or better than 256? And why? Thanks. Hugger

The memory bus width (the "bits") only serves to increase or decrease memory bandwidth.
The 5770 uses GDDR5 and a 128-bit bus, which provides 76.8GB/s memory bandwidth. Compared to the 256-bit GDDR3 3850, the 5770 has a lead of about 24GB/s despite the smaller bus width. http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards....=615&card2=546 In the end, actual memory bandwidth is what matters. That's why ATI went this route. It's cheaper to use 128-bit and GDDR5 than it is to use 256-bit and GDDR3. This in turn passes on the savings to you as a consumer.

I'm doing everything you want to do in your post on my integrated graphics card.

so a GDDR5 128 bit has the same potential with a GDDR3 256 bit?

it is faster then that and would get better preformance with GDDR5 with 128bit by a long shot.

GDDR5 allows double the bit interface per capacitor as GDDR3
So, in theory 128bit GDDR5~256bit GDDR3

GDDR3 may be a bit faster because of lower timings.
