Default 4650 vs 9800GT low profile card...

So I'm trying to help my friend get back into PC gaming and he has a dell that only fits low profile PCIE cards.

So far I've only found an HD4650 that would fit and a 9800GT, anyone else know of any other cards? Which one of these two cards is better?

The 9800GT, definitely, you'll get much better performance from it than with an HD4650.

the 9800GT will pwn the 4650. There's also a low-profile 9600GT IIRC too.

also make sure not to stress the PSU too much.

Well, a 9800GT shouldn't stress any PSU too much. As long as you've got ~500W, that will be fine.

Hellooooo, the low-profile 9800GTs are virtually always underclocked. Same with the low power models. They actually end up about equal to a 9500GT or 9600GS. But people still pay $100+ for them. "It's a wonderful world".

So I'd wager it's about equal to a 4650 GDDR3 model, slightly better at most.

Then overclock it from the stocks. It will beat the 4650 either way.

Most slim PC's like that only have 200W. Maybe 300W.

I don't think you could actually downclock a 9800GT enough to make it as crappy as the 9500GT is, lol. The slight downclock that they have, at worst, might put it closer to a 9600GT than normal, but it's nothing that drastic.

I've heard the 9600GT low-profile cards ruin on a 300-350W PSU just fine, dunno about the 9800GTs tho.

There's a 512MB XFX 9800GT that is really slim, and as far as I know it isn't bad at all.

My XFX Green Edition 9800GT, no power plug, runs on a 350W Dell PSU just fine. Its not low profile but smaller than the regular 9800GT.
