Smile Help a newbie - can I have a 4870?

Hello good people,

Listen i'm not guna lie, I really don't know a huge amount about computers.. I currently have an old school (a way of making an old computer sound cool right?) Athlon 1600 xp with a Geforce Ti something or other which was the bees knees in 1948!...

But..

I perhaps naively went and bought a new computer the other day that I thought looked ideal for just like some budget gaming, but i'm a bit worried now it's come to buying a graphics card for it...

this is the spec which i'm guna copy and paste to make sure it's right, and i'd like to know what you experts think is the best graphics card I could run on it.... i've had my eye on a radeon 4870 512mb but am I being unrealistic?

I wouldn't run a 4870 in there, the PSU may or may not run it.

Get a better PSU, and you can have it. I suggest at least a 500W. Now you can do a 4770 if you can find one or I think even a 5770 (Do not count me on this). But for now, try and find yourself a nice 8600GT or something. That will do you good.

First of all, welcome! I'd recommend a couple of things about your budget gaming build. First, go with a larger HD. You're going to want it, since newer games (+downloadable content) can go larger than 10GB per install. That's not typical, but it probably will be soon. You need a different power supply. You can find a Rosewill on Newegg for cheap, and I'd recommend a 600w+. This gives you headroom in the future to overclock your CPU and Video Card. The 4870 is a great budget card and you might be able to find one for cheap on the forums.

You could run a 4870, your ram and cpu will be your bottleneck tho. Maybe think about a 9800gtx. Depending how much you paid tho, maybe even think about returning it and building your own. Its actually pretty easy and you can make a better rig than that for 600 or so...if you dont mind going AMD.

Dude, a 500W would be plenty.

PS: I got an old as dirt X1600 PRO sitting here if you want it 15 shipped. That will be WAY better than your current graphics card.

He could probably even get away with less than 500w unless he was planning xfire or sli.

No doubt. They just have a bunch of great deals on the Rosewill 600+'s. I just gave a heads up for some OC headroom.

You could have done a lot better on the part choices there if you built it yourself...really any money you might have saved or money you spent on not wasting your on labor on the build just became somewhat null since you are going to have to replace the PSU if you want a 4870 range GPU or higher and you are going to be stuck with a hard to sell sub par PSU
