Ok I have been toying with the idea of getting a HD4870, but I still love my 8800GT that has treated me so good. I can get it up to 800/1800/2000 stable with the BIOS vmod, but I wonder, could I get more otta a hardmod vmod?

Do it. With 1.45 vGPU under water cooling, mine hits 900/2214/2000 (Qmonda RAM ftl). You can do 1.35-1.4 safely on air and get 850-875 on the core.

Go for it!
It's wicked easy. Just make sure you have an aftermarket cooler of some kind. You will only be doing the core mod, which is quite simple. Do not do a memory volt mod, people have tried, and even at a massive voltage increase, it still won't budge above 1,050 mhz. I could only get my GT to around 680 core without the mod. I boosted the voltage from 1.0 to 1.25, and easily got to around 790 mhz core, and around 2,000 mhz shaders.

I don't think the BIOS vmod will give you as many volts though. I think I read that defualt volts is around 0.95v, BIOS gives you 1.05v, but an actual volt mod will allow up to 1.5v if you are brave enough to push it that high.

Yea, for mine I did the 1.1 mod, but found that my 3d was only running at 1.05 (up from 1.00 or .95), so the physical mod would work better.
