I'm a hardware noob, so I don't even know what a volt mod is... It's done from the BIOS, no? My card was preordered, it has stock cooling. It's had a rough time, and I've overclocked it to 695/975 (idle ~50 C; load ~57 C; fan on max). Would a volt mod be feasible? How much would the lifetime be shortened? I plan to buy another one and SLI them in a few months, so could they both be volt modded? What's the performance gain through v-modding?

I think there are basically two types of volt mods. One is through the bios to raise the voltage and the second is using soldering skills and a VR. I don't own an 8800 GT so I don't know what kind of clocks you can get. As for lifetime I'm sure it will be shortened as there is more voltage than stock but I don't think it would damage the card unless you do some crazy voltage like 1.6v. Yes, both cards can be volt modded and as for performance gain my cards use to clock to a max of 789/1976/1101 and now they can do 828/2052/1124. So I'm quite happy I did the volt mod.

NO it's not worth it. I did one myself and just fried the crap out of my card. It worked fine at first, then BAM! I had to RMA two cards this year, and the RMA takes like 2 and a half months.
I did do a successful volt mod on a 7800GS once though. That was pretty cool.

The clocks you can attain are relativly high. In the range of 750 on the core to 800.
Really an 8800GTS 512 is an overvolted 8800GT with more shaders enabled.

So... basically I shouldn't do it, or in any case only do it to like 1.1 or so?

If you have done any work with circuits or electrical stuff, then it is a fun project. I did mine with he supervision of a computer hardware major roommate, which was a great learning experience.
My card couldn't do more than 680 core, when I did the volt mod and set the volts to 1.25, I can now get to 790 core (haven't really tried to go any higher). One thing for sure, an aftermarket cooler is essential. Something like a Duorb, HR-03, Zalman VF-1000, or Arctic cooler should work great. The BIOS mod is not as reliable, mine only set the voltage to 1.0. This is my first volt mod, and have had zero issues with it. Measure 3 times, test, measure again, then solder and dial.
