Default 9600GT voltmod

The 9600GT is different from most cards. It's also a gamble. Seems most 9600GTs out there do not take well to volt modding. Once you can get the weird OCP to go away your all good. Putting the card on water made a huge difference.

WARNING: Do not make BIOS voltage adjustments! Some 9600GTs will increase to 1.35v if you change the BIOS to 1.2v or higher and you will still have OCP which makes the card unusable for 3D rendering and folding.

Do not add a VR without making a VID mod adjustment! The VID mod will increase the OCP. I've had cards totally freak out with only a VR and no VID adjustment.

The VID mod will gave you +.05v over VID for OCP. Thus a 1.3v VID will allow you to increase voltage to 1.35v

The 1.25v VID mod is recommended for those on air. It will give you around 1.18v W/O a VR. Then use the VR to increase to a desired voltage under 1.3v

The 1.30v or 1.35v VID mod is recommended for water setups. Voltage will be about -.07v from VID set and will allow you to increase voltage to .05 above VID.

I used the VID mod info from here:
reference designhttp://www.ur-hardware.com/guide/17-...20-9600gt-vmod
http://xtreview.com/addcomment-id-49...-volt-mod.html
Stock 1.15v VID (the two links above say that stock is 1.1v, but I've yet to see a 9600GT with 1.1v. All have been 1.15v.

The 1.30V VID worked great for me.

Currantly running the 1.35v VID:

If you need help figuring out which VIDs to connect or disconnect to get your desired VID, just ask and I will be glad to help.

I also added a VR so I could tune the voltage as needed.

100K VR for vGPU

The vMEM mod can be done three different ways.
You can use this pad with a 100K VR: EDIT: I do not suggest doing the vMEM mod with Hynix memory chips!

VR ajusted ~90k ohms will get you 2.2v

If you find that pad hard to hit with the tall resistor next to it you can use this other point labeled in this link or pencil the resistor next to it. http://www.ur-hardware.com/guide/17-...20-9600gt-vmod

All the vMEM mods work. Be careful if you choose the pencil vMEM mod. I just barely touched it and got 2.6v vMEM. I did the pencil mod while system was running as I could watch it change as I added graphite.

Before you get started you need to prep. Tape off the board around your solder points so you don't touch anything you don't want soldered.

After I'm done, I super glue my points so I don't brake my mods handling the card.

Here are some more pics for your viewing plessure:

vGPU VR mod:

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...l/100_1064.jpg

vMEM VR mod: In the top right you see the solder point with the wire stick up off the board.
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...l/100_1101.jpg

vMEM, vGPU, and switches attached for both. Switches are optional, but are great for troubleshoting problems. Which I had plently of with these crazy cards.

My crayon sized soldering iron.
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...l/100_1093.jpg

Results thus far:
On air 850Mhz core 2000 shader @ 1.23v. Load temps where ~55c. On air above 800Mhz you will need to keep temps below 55c.

On water 900Mhz core 2200 shader @ 1.333v. Load temps ~35c. At these currant temps the card doesn't like anything higher then 1.35v

One of the higher core clock 9600GT on hwbot. I think the highest is 1010Mhz on LN2

EDIT: Special thanks to CL3P20.

As of right now my success rate with these cards is 33%. I've modded 3 cards and only had luck with one. Hoping to raise it to 50%. Going start with a 1.25v VID mod since I'm not going through the trouble of adding it to my loop until I know it's not going to hit me with OCP.

So far so good. Did the 1.25v VID mod. Gave me 1.18v idle and ~1.15v load. I've notice vdroop varies from card to card. Most will drop ~.05v. I've seen one raise .05v.

c790/2000s/975m

Memory doesn't want to go past 975Mhz with stock volts. I'm not going to attempt vMEM with my GPU on air. The GPU temps are 55c in 3Dmark and 66c in ATItool. Ambient in 75F. I feel pretty comfortable this card is going to OC well. I'm going to try and get this thing on water soon.

Also updated the OP with a pic link for measuring points

Second card has been successfully volted to 1.33v on water with 880Mhz core stable.

Added some more notes to OP:

Quote:

The 1.30v or 1.35v VID mod is recommended for water setups. Voltage will be about -.07v from VID set and will allow you to increase voltage to .05 above VID.

Some pics are not showing since they where linked from XS and XS forum is down ATM. If you need pics for vGPU and vMEM VR placement let me know and I will take my own pics. I will try to do this anyways when I get time.
