Unhappy 9600GT BIOS voltmod...gone wrong?

I was fooling around with a BIOS mod on my MSI 9600GT and upped the voltage to 1.2v(stock 1.1v...1.15v measured) to see if there would be any OCing difference.

Well there was, kind of. My volt meter was reading 1.45v. That is not a typo. I was able to quickly revert back to the stock BIOS and the card is in my PC as I type. Back to a nice and healthy 1.15v

So two questions.

1.) Did I do any permanent damage?

2.) Does increasing the Core voltage help to OC the shaders at all?

2.5) This card is a dedicated folder, am I wasting my time with voltage mods on a folding GPU?

I am going to start folding on the card to see what happens. Thank god for my backup GTX285. No loss in WUs for the day.

What happened with the BIOS mod is normal for this card. Do not attempt BIOS voltage mods on a 9600GT. You need to do a VID mod to change voltage. with stock cooler and a good cooled case I would suggest 1.2-1.25v.

Click the link in my sig for a good guide on this card. Sorry the pics for the VR mod is not avaible ATM. I'm going to take some more pics and post, but the VID mod info is still there.

EDIT: oh, I dout you did any damage if a short run. so long as you didn't run any 3D

Well its strange Pizzaman, because I did the same mod on my EVGA cards and didnt have a problem. They are both reading ~1.85v. It was just the MSI card that went all crazy on me.

Do you fold with your vModded 9600 or is it just for benches?

I dont plan on adding any aftermarket cooling to my 3 cards, because there is not enough room. I am just going to flash the BIOS to adjust the shaders and leave it at that.

Two out of three cards I used a BIOS voltage increase it set really high volts. The one that did increase was still limited to 1.20v before OCP kicks in. To get past that you need to do a VID mod. The VID mod will increase OCP to +.05v above set VID. Example: If you set VID to 1.30v you can increase votlage up to 1.35v before hitting OCP. When you hit OCP the cards voltage reading will be around ~.95v. When you hit OVP you will get 0.00v. I've ran up to 1.45v and haven't hit OVP yet. 1.33v seemed to be the sweet spot on h20.

Thanks for the info. I wont be water cooling these GPUs anytime soon, so I think I am going to stick with stock volts for now.

Another question. Do you check for vDroop on your GPUs as you test them?

The MSI card has a vDroop of .03 when folding. Is that normal for a GPU?

I will have to test the EVGA card again, but I think there was less, if any, vDroop.

Each card is different. Some have a drop, while some have an increase.

Funny you should post that. I just finished reverted the MSI card back to stock BIOS, before I was doing stock voltage and OCed clocks, and now I am getting an increase.

I just installed and tested the EVGAs and they show about .02v vDroop.

So final volts are ~1.18v under load for all 3 cards, and temps are all okay.

That finishes my BIOS modding experiments for the weekend. Now to let these guys fold, and see what shaders they can run.

Thanks for the comments Pizzaman.
