Default XFX 9600gt, desperately need help volt modding a non-standard PCB!

Hi, I'm new to overclock.net, and new to volt modding. I have a non reference design 9600gt that I have been searching forums endlessly for help with. I want to do a vmem mod and maybe a vgpu mod but mainly the mem mod because this version of the 9600gt has under-clocked mem (it’s the pv-t96g-yhl3). Anyhow these are a few pics, I've already got my soldering gun and electrical tape for safety etc... (just the Digital Multimeter and Variable Resistors I don't have)

Any other tips will be useful. Thanks in advance.

Hi, and welcome to OCN.

First thing you should do is get the numbers off of the ICs I marked on the back of your pcb. You/we will need the data sheets for them.

Second, you are going to need a Digital Multimeter if you want to be safe as you mod this card. Preferably one with a continuity setting, one that beeps when you touch two connected points. These are actually very inexpensive. (I got one for 4 bucks). *It's after you get the readings (of the resistance in ohms) from certain points that you'll know what variable resistors to get.

Third you will have to decide if you just want to do a pencil mod or get serious with it and do some soldering. Soldering is the best option, as pencil (the graphite) can fade off over time and your mod along with it.

A magnifying glass comes in handy too.

I'm in the process of doing my first volt mod to an XFX card but your pcb has a different layout so all I can really do for now is advise you on how to get started.

Just start with the basics, numbers of the ICs, DMM, decide what mod you want to try.

There are some very knowledgeable people here on OCN and I'm sure someone will be by and lend you a hand.

Trust me---you don't want to rush this. I've almost killed the card I'm trying to mod like 3 times already. Slow, steady, and sure is the way to go.

Edit: Also, could you please go to the User CP, and fill in your system specs as best as you can..? Thank you.

I don't know if you are asking me to confirm the numbers you gave for the IC's or whether you want to know the odd assortment of numbers and letters on the IC, but in answer to both-
You correctly labeled the IC's.

I definitely don't want to do a pencil mod, I want to do some soldering.
Where could I get a DMM?

Radio Shack has them for like 30 bucks for a decent one!

Yeah those are the numbers. Let me look around and find the data sheets. You can get a DMM from Radio Shack, or, if you have time, just call some electronics stores--ones that sell components not tv's and stuff. They really aren't very expensive.

I'll tell you this, I bought a 15w soldering iron from Radio Shack, a damn good one, and it was only like 9 bucks. And some really thin, silver (you want as little lead as possible) soldering wire. This one : Iron.

Gather your tools and let me hunt down the data sheets.

My new cooler doesn't fit my card so I'm going to be "modding" my mod here for now but I'll get on those data sheets. Just hang loose. Maybe tomorrow.

Thanks crashdummy35, just one other question. I heard that cut up IDE cables are good for these mods. Is that true?

Here's CL3P20's guide for doing certain kinds of cards. It also has a handy little "getting started" section in it. Have a read. He shows that he uses IDE cables and they work fine. CL3P20'S GOOD GUIDE.

Here's what I'm going to try (attached picture). I was digging through my spare parts and found a 3-pin to molex connector....I'm going to use the pins to connect to the IC chip's legs. My soldering skilld are zilch and in my head I see this making it a bit easier.

I've found a few good pictures referencing one of your IC chips but it's for the core not the memory. I'll gather everything I have up and post back here in a bit.

Found this. XFX 9800GTX+ Vmods. It has a good picture of your u501-RT8841 GQW AHB2L chip and the pin to measure against a ground for resistance. That's the gpu though. I'm still looking for your mem controller since that's what you'd like to focus on.

If you want to mod the gpu also, start by measuring the resistance between the 2 points I marked for you in the photo.

Going to get my DMM today from Dick Smith and I'll get on it.
I read CL3P20's guide, that's why I asked the question just to make sure.

I measured the resistance, putting one pin on 10 and another on 6 and it showed as 1.500k (and then that sign that I can't write with my keyboard).
