Default Evga 8600gt, setting up for a volt mod

I am doing a pencil vmod on my 8600gt just to start out vmodding.

I already looked all over this 8600gt vmod but I'm gonna need some help on mine since it's a different revision.

Here are the front and back of my card:

Start off by getting the numbers off of the chips I marked. If you have a magnifying glass you may need it . Get the maker/numbers off of the RAM chips also.

Next, you should get some really close up shots of the chips as well. Or, you could divide the front and back of the card into quarters and get a shot of each quarter and label the (i.e. upper-left rear; upper-right rear, etc etc) but the shots have to be macro--as detailed as possible so when someone helps you they can use the detailed picture to show you exactly what you are going to do. It helps to prop up the card, then set your camera down on some coasters or a book--whatever--to steady it and get a really clear shot.

You will also need a Digital MultiMeter (DMM) if you want to do it right and not risk frying that card.

Okay, on your Top Left, get the number off of that chip; the one with 7 legs on each side--also see what it's listed as on the board U50?.

Bottom right get the numbers for U507.

Pull the cooler off and look and see if there are any chips that look like controllers on the front. Look where that square thing is I labeled as 1.

When you look for the data sheet using Google, you only use the first series of numbers. But you can just post them here and we'll help you find them.

Edit: Look for chips with numbering similar to this....6549CBZ P731CNS

I found the mod for that card XFX 8600GT.

SWEET! +rep. I'll give this pencil mod a shot when I get the aftermarket cooler and memory sinks.

Try this: Ultra VGA Cooler. I'm not even kidding, with 1.32v in my tiny 9500GT I'm idling at 35c right now with this cooler. It's out of production so they are trying to dump them. The problem is, with XFX and the way they only leave 2 screws for these smaller cards, it gets tricky mounting this thing-- you have to remove one of the base mounts and offset it for it to work, but, I got it to work. Also it comes with enough sinks so you can throw a couple on the mosfets for the mods--which is a good idea.

Here's a picture of what I did to the base.

When you are ready to start pencilling, just post here and we can help you.

Being that your card is not Low Profile, you may not even have to mod the cooler base.

ummmm, more v'modding fun.

So hard to follow the PCB lines on black PCBs unless you have super large macro pics, but looks like you've got a good guide to go by. Was about to say it looks like the other XFX ICs where pin #4 controls FB. Looks like my guess was right from the pics, but can't really see the PCB lines.

Can you get some more pics and we can help you nail down the GPU voltage measure points and possible CAP addition points? If you can get some more pics with the quality of the 'bottom left' pic I wuold be able to track the board better.

BTW, you guys are welcome to join the Mod Squad.

I have a few unison .07mm mechanical pencils, do you think that graphite will be good enough?

I talked to cl3p20 about this zalman FS-V7 cooler, which was 15.00 free shipping, and he said that it should be enough to cool it. I also got some cooper memory heatsinks bc those crappy aluminum ones that come with the cooler didn't look good enough IMO.

I am at work right now but I will take some more pics when I get home. What upload res should I make these pics and what website does the image size-down? I use tinypic.com.

Sounds like a plan.

I used a mech pencil to test my mod points out first and it worked fine. You just have to keep an eye on the ohms. Coloring the top of the resistor gave me a very small drop in actual resistance; I drew one good line along the side of the resistor and the ohms plummeted. I was like "Whoa!"

If you lower them too much at first, use a toothpick, or your finger to gently rub some of the graphite off. Then recheck the ohms. It'll be tricky using a pencil to get consistent drops, but it can be done.

Edit: @pizzaman, I'm trying to get situated for a couple of more benches before I apply. Having some trouble doing 4Ghz on my cpu again....
