Default 7900GT 512 volt mod

I am in the process of getting a new vid card and have picked out the 7900GT 512mb version by Gainward. At close inspection and doing a little reading the circuit board seems to be similar or the same as the GTX. Therefore I am thinking the core volt mod may not work. Can somebody confirm this at all

cheers

I would look to what others here are gaining (Sideburns, etc) and the cards they are using.

Then purchasing a card such as they have will allow them to more easily help you attain the modifications you desire. Usually these companies follow the reference of Nvidia so the card board are comparitive but NOT always.

Well...I don't see why the vmod wouldn't work....that makes no sense.

Because the 7900GT and the GTX are similar...is the reason the mod DOES work!

If it's the same layout...then get it. Good luck.

Both the GT and GTX boards are very similar if not mostly the same. As nvidia cards go the PCB's usually stay very similar on the same series of cards..So as said above i reckon the V-mod will work mate.

Apprently this is a pic of the GTX :

And a pic of the GT :

I kind of think its the same card but not sure.

The 7900GT runs at 1.2V whereas the 7900GTX runs at 1.4V and has 256MB of more memory.

if the gainward 7900GT 512Mb is on the 7900GTX PCB, which I assume it will be, it will have 512MB of RAM but will still be runinng at 1.2V. by doing the vmod you'll get it up to 1.55 or 1.4V or 1.5V, which ever you choose, and essentially making it a 7900GTX. All that is different is the volts and by unlocking the volts with the conductive ink vmod you can get past stock GTX volts and potentially release more power out of it. The only thing is, if the layout of the back of the PCB is differnet where you place the ink then you might have to do a little bit more work. If it's the same you're good to go, if it's not then you might have to do it the way of the 7900GTX rather than the 7900GT way

The vmod should work regardless and you'll get a GTX for less money.

Can the GT vmod be done on a GTX board?? I'm not sure since I dont have one

My only other dilema is if I go and get the 512 version and decide to go SLI for a future upgrade the larger memory version might not be available where the 256 version could be. OR is there going to be more of the 512 versions made by others or even Gainward still. I am having hassles sourcing information about these cards as they are rare. Hence you are my source and is greatly appreciated

Can I run SLI with 1 card with 256 and the other with 512? I am thinking NO?

Do I just take the risk and get the 512 version knowing that there might not be any more in the future?

cheers

If I was you..I'd just take the risk. Usually SLI is only a back of the mind option anyways....you're more likely to do a complete upgrade.

You are basically buying a 7900GTX if you vmod it (actually a little better)

So I say buy it and a vf900CU, and vmod it to 1.55v.

If you do decide to pick it up...let us know how the mod goes and post up some benchies for us all to see! I hope to see it scream past 700/1850 at least.
