Default SCSI Harddrives

I just bought 5 new 36.6GB 10K RPM hardrives and I bought the wrong PCI adapter for them. They are IBM Ultrastar with 80 pin connecters. I was thinking about buying converters to go to 68 pin, but I don't know. If anyone could help me on hooking these up to a windows XP Pro with SP2 that would be great. I also need to know which hardware to buy. I also got a couple other SCSI harddrives in this lot. I think some of them might already be 68 ping drives. Thanks, todd258

buy the 80 pin to 68 pin adapter. You can get them at FRY's if you have one by you. Excellent choice on the drives. You will be pleased once you get them up and running. I got the adapter for my 2 x Hitachi 10,000rpm SCSI 320's, it worked great and even gave me and extra plug for my SCSI cd drive.

Are the drives u320 cheetahs?

-edit-- just saw that you said 10k the cheetahs are 15k.

You will need an adapter with a molex power plug too...

The "SCA" 80-pin to "wide" 68-pin SCSI adapters almost always have a 4-pin power plug on them.
Here is a cheap one you will find all over the place on the internet:
http://www.computercablesource.com/detail.aspx?ID=850

I can garuntee you it is not U320 compliant though, its only a 2 layer PCB and you will likely have issues running a U320 with some drives or adapters. Another dead giveaway besides the cheap PCB is the text "Ultra4" on it. There never was Ultra4. SCSI changed to the names Ultra160 and Ultra320.

BUT even if you get good SCA to wide SCSI adapters, it will be very difficult to get all 5 drives running at U320 or even U160. Even the good adapters add a lot of capacitance to the bus which degrades signal integrity.

You best bet is to get an SCA hot swap bay or external enclosure if you want to run that many SCA drives. Here is one example:
http://www.servercase.com/miva/miva?..._Code=BR-SCA35
but I think you can find some for cheaper.

I should add that those 36GB SCSI drives are probably from 2 drive generations ago now and a modern SATA drive like the Seagate 7200.10 will outperform them for desktop apps and games, give you more space and use less power.
The older SCSI drives will still be better for multi-user database work and will probably last longer (more reliable).
So consider this before you spend too much money getting them up and running.

I was looking at those 80 to 68 pin converters, but I don't know which PCI adapter to get.

CLP320 which controller do you use??

I only plan on running two of them. I am thinking about selling all of the other ones I have.
