Default RAID question

1.Can i use RAID on 2 different hardrives like 1 40gb western digital and 1 80gb seagate?

2.i have another western digital 40gb but it looks a little different than the other i think its older but can i use RAID on 2 western digital 40gb and my 80 gb seagate

Umm... you can.. but the performance won't be as great as with 2 identical drives and you can only RAID 40GB on each drive so half the space on the 80GB will be wasted.

if you check that the two wd's have the same spechs then you can raid it no probs

make sure there both either ide, or sata, you cant mix platforms

well there both ide but how do i RAID them without using the windows cd????

I do not know if your board will support IDE RAID. If it does the specific procedure for your board will be outlined in your mobo manual. It is often best to follow your mobos instructions for this becasue some boards have special menus to enter that will be different from other boards ect.

You continue to use your harddrives in a non-raid format with your current motherboard. Either your bios/motherboard supports it or it does not, there is not in between unfortunately.

well i just read a tutorial and you can create a software raid using windows but it said its a little bit slower than just regular hardware raid
