can tilting hard drives while theyre spinning damage them?? ive been building computers for my friends for the past 5 or so years and ive never had a problem i couldnt fix. well my buddy got a 250 gig 7200.8 SATA hard drive that we seemed to be having problems with.. it would give errors about bad segments and would crash the computer several times on random occasions.. we had it RMA'd and it worked fine for a couple months until similar problems started happening.. every one in a while, about once a week.. the computer would not be able to boot into windows.. sometimes itd freeze at the windows logo with blue bars.. somteims itd say corrupt system file.. sometimes itd go to a black screen and nothing would happen.. i went to his house to check it out.. i found that they sent him a refurbished hard drive (i didnt install this hard drive when they sent it to him so i didnt know it was refurbished.. i could tell because it says CERTIFIED REPAIRD HDD on it).. anyway i ran chkdsk and repaired windows and it got into windows fine. this is like the 5th time doing this.. the other times it did it by itself going into windows. i restarted and it went to a black screen. i tilted the hard drive left and right to see if it was spinning and it was.. i didnt stop though and i felt a hard jerk come from the hard drive. the hard drive stopped spinning i think. is it that easy to damage a hard drive?? were going to RMA the hard drive again regardless because my buddy bougt a new hard drive to begin with, had problems with it, and they had the nerve to send him a refurbished one... but i want to know.. is it that easy to mess up a hard drive? i didnt even tilt it that far just enough to feel the spinnage!

Going Broke Overclocking
![]() |
Handling it should not matter while it's running so long as you didn't get a static discharge, but don't tell thatm
! Sounds like is a POS and needs to be RMAed again. Is there a 1-800 # to call for an RMA? If so pitch a firm but polite complaint and insist on a NEW replacement!

Tilting it wont damage it but ESD will ( Electro static discharge ). I would RMA it but before doing so phone them and tell them what happend and that you dont appreciate a refurb drive.

Not unless you somehow generated ESD, accidentally rubbing or causing friction against it.

You got pretty LOUD, hopefully they respond to that in a defensive manner and give you some 10k RPM drives or something...

i dont think seagate makes 10k rpm drives but it would be awesome as hell if they sent you a raptor (unlikely though)
i would be happy if i got one of the 7200.10 rpm drives.

Yeah, the only company i know of that sends new stuff as a replacement is eVGA. Everyone else sends someone else's used crap that was supposedly fixed.
