Default did i damage the hard drive?

can tilting hard drives while theyre spinning damage them?? ive been building computers for my friends for the past 5 or so years and ive never had a problem i couldnt fix. well my buddy got a 250 gig 7200.8 SATA hard drive that we seemed to be having problems with.. it would give errors about bad segments and would crash the computer several times on random occasions.. we had it RMA'd and it worked fine for a couple months until similar problems started happening.. every one in a while, about once a week.. the computer would not be able to boot into windows.. sometimes itd freeze at the windows logo with blue bars.. somteims itd say corrupt system file.. sometimes itd go to a black screen and nothing would happen.. i went to his house to check it out.. i found that they sent him a refurbished hard drive (i didnt install this hard drive when they sent it to him so i didnt know it was refurbished.. i could tell because it says CERTIFIED REPAIRD HDD on it).. anyway i ran chkdsk and repaired windows and it got into windows fine. this is like the 5th time doing this.. the other times it did it by itself going into windows. i restarted and it went to a black screen. i tilted the hard drive left and right to see if it was spinning and it was.. i didnt stop though and i felt a hard jerk come from the hard drive. the hard drive stopped spinning i think. is it that easy to damage a hard drive?? were going to RMA the hard drive again regardless because my buddy bougt a new hard drive to begin with, had problems with it, and they had the nerve to send him a refurbished one... but i want to know.. is it that easy to mess up a hard drive? i didnt even tilt it that far just enough to feel the spinnage!

Handling it should not matter while it's running so long as you didn't get a static discharge, but don't tell thatm !
Sounds like is a POS and needs to be RMAed again.
Is there a 1-800 # to call for an RMA? If so pitch a firm but polite complaint and insist on a NEW replacement!

Tilting it wont damage it but ESD will ( Electro static discharge ). I would RMA it but before doing so phone them and tell them what happend and that you dont appreciate a refurb drive.

Not unless you somehow generated ESD, accidentally rubbing or causing friction against it.

hey guys i emailed seagates RMA department and this is what they had to say

Quote:
With regards to your query, we would like to inform you that we would not be able to replace the drive with brand new drive. Seagate sends factory repaired drives (which would be as good as new) as replacement units to the customers.

These factory-repaired units undergo the same type of test in par to the new drives and these drives are as good as new one. In addition, the replacement unit carries the greater of: original warranty balance or 90 days.

We would request you to e-mail us back with the clear picture of the drive label, as the warranty status shows as Unknown. If in warranty, we will process RMA # and assist you further.

We understand your concern regarding the performance of the drive to our relevant team, so that they will work on it.

Regards,
Dolly
Seagate Warranty Support
the bold parts i do not understand whatsoever. is it me or is this Dolly bad at english? anyway i replied back saying this... and im still waiting for a reply

Quote:
are you telling me that if i have had the refurbished hard drive for 90 days my warranty is void? if so, that is absurd. how can you sell a brand new hard drive and give it a 5 year warranty, but when someone needs to have their drive replaced you give them a hard drive that has been defected before and you give them a shorter warranty? i hope im reading that part wrong. and besides, i just called the warranty support, gave them my S/N and P/N and they said my warranty is still good.

you say you cannot replace my hard drive with a brand new one and you claim that the refurbished hard drives are just as good as new. I had a serious problem with the original hard drive which wasnt even refurbished. It stopped working one day and windows would not be able to read it. The hard drive was not abused or mishandled in any way whatsoever. you guys sent me a replacement which WAS refurbished and it died the same way, so its obvious these hard drives were designed very poorly and should be taken off the shelves. I'll take your word for it that your refurbished hard drives are supposedly good as new, but you are leaving out the fact that this model hard drive is complete crap and has been known to DIE. when i had a new one, it died. so with that in mind, i DEMAND that i am not sent the same model hard drive because quite frankly, they are not reliable and are not worthy of being considered a quality product. what kind of company sends out a product that is known to be defective over and over and never does anything to solve it? youre not helping me at all, all you are doing is making things complicated.. if you send me a THIRD hard drive and it dies the same exact way do you honestly expect me to keep sending them back and dealing with the same bullcrap over and over? I know for sure that the product is defective itself and that i am not doing anything to contribute to it dying. i have built computers for years and still do, and this is the only computer that has this problem and it is because of the hard drive.... ARE YOU GOING TO SEND ME A DIFFERENT MODEL HARD DRIVE or are you just going to send me another unreliable hard drive?
what do you guys think?

You got pretty LOUD, hopefully they respond to that in a defensive manner and give you some 10k RPM drives or something...

i dont think seagate makes 10k rpm drives but it would be awesome as hell if they sent you a raptor (unlikely though)

i would be happy if i got one of the 7200.10 rpm drives.

Yeah, the only company i know of that sends new stuff as a replacement is eVGA. Everyone else sends someone else's used crap that was supposedly fixed.
