Default How I managed to save my Data when my RAID0 rig died.

I thought I would share this with you guys so that you can save your data in the event that something brings down your RAID0 rig.

To do this you need an identical motherboard to replace the fried one.

Here's what happened--I run my Farm out on the porch--high humidity this Fall really did a number on a couple of the rigs. One casualty is my Water Cooled P4 rig in a Lian Li case--this is a fairly customised set up and somewhat of a bother to rebuild. It also is the repository for not only 150GB of family archives/photos/documents/SW but for a great deal of powerful SW I have installed to do design work. Backing up the data is a lesser concern because I always burn important data to disc. Salvaging the entire OS on the RAID0 array is my number one concern!

Here's what I did--knowing that I was running a risk by Folding Outdoors I bought a backup mobo months ago and ran a lesser P4 on it as a Folder. Today when WaterClocker froze and refused to reboot no matter what I did I knew it was time for the transplant. I had hoped that I could simply plug in the array and be good to go. And that is exactly what happened.

Obviously XP freaked out because I had a different processor and wants my to validate--but I am into the OS and can backup anything I need to and since this is a legit OS I can just make the call to MS and re-up my XP validation.

Bottom line is that if you have an identical mobo you can easily salvage your RAID hosted OS.

Since I have the rig apart I took the time to dissassemble everything and douche out the loop on the water cooling system. But that;'s another thread...

I should mention that it helps to go into the BIOS and check the settings and to reboot a couple of times to invoke the RAID array. I needed to enable SATA RAID and to enable the SATA BOOT ROM option as well to get into the RAID set up (CTRL + I on my mobo) and see that indeed my array was intact and ready to go. I changed nothing and rebooted right into XP.

This can only be done if the cpu or mobo dies right? But if one of the drives in raid0 dies then you're out of luck.

I was amazed it worked--of course Windows is constantly bugging me to Validate...but I did manage to transfer the files I need to transfer.

Next I will reintstall the original CPU fromt he dead mobo and reattach theStorm WB and put WaterClocker back into service--then I will Validate.

I think I might also have a bad stick of RAM...so I am sorting it out by degrees--the old mobo is done though--the AGP slot is corroded--I already cleaned it once with a nail file to get it working (LOL) but the whole board has been twitchy since the first coolant spill about a year ago...

When my RAID01 array went down (Go figure, it's supposed to be redundant), it was on an nForce4 controller. Took it next doors to my neighbords, plugged it into a DFI Expert, worked good enough so I could get my data off

If a drive dies in a RAID0 array, you're screwed- No amount of swapping will get you your data back. But CyberD's board died, not his hard drives, which is the 1 case where this will actually work.
