hey guys i have a 320 gig seagate barracuda 7200.10 hard drive... it runs very cool- when i touch it is barely warm. it sits in my case mounted normally. my buddy had a 250 gig 7200.8 hard drive that he had RMA'd.. they gave him a 250 gig 7200.10 (like mine, except smaller) hard drive as a replacement.. BUT YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT ALL SEAGATE REPLACEMENT DRIVES ARE REFURBISHED.. in other words, seagate sends their customers refurbished drives to replace any defective drives they may RMA.. anyway i hooked it up to my computer today, formatted it, and noticed that it was very VERY hot. I had, and still have it, sitting on my desk while its hooked up.. in other words, its not inside the case and is laying outside of it on the desk.. IS THIS WHY ITS SO HOT? i dont want to go through the hassle of installing it in the case to see if that cools it down because im pretty much done formatting and copying some MP3s to it for my friend. its hot even when idle or not doing anything.. i think it spins all the time? i unplug the sata cable and left power in and it still gets super hot.. i think im going to complain to seagate if it isnt suppose to be this hot...

Sometimes things seem Hotter VIA just touching it. Some Hardrives get hotter than others. Either due to how they work or in rare cases a faulty Unit. I wouldnt worry too much...Generally keep it under 45c Load.
I would try and get a Temp probe on it for an accurate reading.

hey guys check this out:
__________________i downloaded and ran speedfan. HD01 which is MY hard drive (which is installed in the computer case) is reading 36 degrees CELCIUS.. which is just fine and cool.. HD01 on the other hand (which is my friends HD and is sitting outside the case on a wood table in an antistatic bag) is reading 53 degrees CELCIUS with a FIRE logo next to it... could it be because its outside the case where no air circulation is taking place??? its really hot compared to MY hard drive.

It very well could be that. Try taking it outside of the anti static bag. Why are you running it in there anyways?

How about you touch it ? Is it really 50 degrees Celcius ? Don't always rely on transistors and 0,1,0,1,0s.....
