Default advertised space and real space

both wester digital are showing 111gb, against 120gb advertised.

my 250gb seagate is showing 240gb (i don't remember exactly, and i'm at work).

how can i get those lost gigs back, if i can?

you cant. hdd manufactors show 1gig as 1000MB but it isnt 1GB is actually1024MB so in window the hdd space will show up less than advertised

Hard drives never add up to the advertised capacity. There is always a loss of a few gigs. What you are seeing is the actual max capacity. My two barracudas are 2x200gb, which should equal 400gb, but it doesnt, it equals about 375 in total in RAID0

isnt it to do with how many bits are really in a byte and such? im sure there is an FAQ on here about it

but anyway you normally lose about 8% off the advertised

1. this suck. i could use those lost gigs right now

2. i heard a while ago about a law for the manufacturers to advertise lower capacity so the consumer actually get what he should. i guess it's not good anymore
