If it was connected by usb I dont think it would be feasable. My board has an external sata port which would work at good speeds. Why would you want to anyway???

I was able to boot linux from a USB flashdirve. Some mobos have an option in BIOS about using a removable drive as a boot device. I think it would be dependant on your particular mobo.

If it's a usb drive then windows will pick it up as a probable drive for installation, I only know this cause I accidently partitioned my ipod and lost 40gb worth of music whilst re-installing windows one day. I don't know 100%for sure cause i have never done it but I reckon it's possible.

Like I said, my mobo has an external sata connection which would operate at the same speed as any internal one. If I was to have an external hard drive that used this connection it would out perform usb. Usb 2.0 is roughly 1100kb/s i think. Sata could possibly reach 1.5-3 gb/s. Correct me if I'm wrong guy's

This is the sort of thing you'd be after, i'm sure there's better/cheaper but only did a quick search.
http://www.nextag.com/Vantec-NexStar...6530C8AEB001FF Should have said this is just an enclosure, you would need to purchase the hard drive seperatly!! forget that i'm talking cr*p! too amny beers, will keep looking. Ps your one still connects by usb 2
