Default installing 2 hard drives

i was thinking of one 160g with xp home,and the other 80g with vista ,can i do this ,if so,how do i choose which one to boot up to.and will it all work wioth no problems,

You would need GRUB to dual boot of 2 hardrives but windows doesn't like to boot of a slave. So without grub it will boot your master.

Once you install Vista it will ask you which one you want to make primary boot drive.

Download and use VistaBootPro to help you once you install Vista

whats grub,and if i dont have it.can i boot say xp home as master.then choose vista,when booted.

and like I said, you use vistabootpro to set default OS. Which can be on 2nd drive.

I have 2 installs of xp on SEPARATE drives,
just select which drive you want to boot from in the BIOS!!

one goes tits up, you always have the other to boot from!!

That's not true. I had no problems with XP Pro and XP Pro x64 in dual boot, and Vista Ultimate x64 and XP Pro also work fine for me. If you install the oldest OS first, then the newer on on a different drive/partition, Windows will automatically make a boot selection screen. By default the newest OS will be selected but you have a 30 second timeout to choose which OS to boot to. Vista also gives you the option to run a RAM test from this screen.

if say i boot from vista as default drive.then i want to play a game in xp home ,can i just open my computer, and change the c drive, to the other drive,by double clicking it.
