Its moving files and folders to certain areas on the hard drive and making more of a cluster of similar or commonly used files that way the read/write head does not have to move so much in finding or writing files.
Its less stress on the drive and also makes it faster in most regards. Its like spring cleaning for a hard drive.

When you install a program, your HD will usually just write stuff to wherever it is most convenient. This causes files to be split into several pieces...fragments. When you defrag, the files are put back together and moved closer to the outside edge of the drive platter which increase read speed and drive efficiency.

yeah pretty much, but it's more like taking file A that has been split in half, combining it, and moving it to a better area on the drive platter.

If you have a TI-83 calculator, "Garbagecollet" does about the same thing.

Rearranging so the files most used are organized for easier finding.
