Use solvents. Ex. alcohol, acetone, paint thinner, tulene, xylene, ether, and paint stripper.

See where data start to get corrupted.
interesting i might do a variation of this i will see if permanent marker will cover up data then color the disc from the outside in to see where it stops reading the disc.

i would like to do this because they tell yo not to clean a disc with any solvent. but i will be using a different computer for this test i think and i will have to let it sit out after using the solvent and then i will wipe it off with water as well before trying to read it.

*edit*
by the way if there is any one that thinks that these are light scratches they are not. i use an exacto knife to make them. they are deeper then any scratch i have seen on a cd with even the worst of scratches.

How bout taking off the top label by scratching the hell out of it? Just make sure you don't let fragments get into the CD drive.

i thought about doing that but that stuff flakes really bad and that is the data that comes off when you scratch that off i think anyway
