If you colour from the outside in, make sure to start where the data ends. If you look at the back of a burned cd, you can usually see it.

Stick one on a dremel and set it to spin at about 22,000RPM(3,000RPM below the RPM the Mythbusters discovered shattered them) for 24 hours, to see what high-speed stress fatigue does to it. I'm sure you've seen the MB slowmo.
Also, do the frisbee test, coaster test and the "There's a chunk missing, but it still works" test, as well as the one where the CD, cracked from hub to outer rim, susposedly still works fine.

I'd say spin the CD up to an extremely high speed then let go of it. I did this with AOL CDs before and used a "drive" out of a junked Apex DVD player. The CD was held in the clamp like in a normal CD rom drive.
I rewired the motor that opened the tray up so I could still operate it while the CD was spinning. The drive motor was also disconnected and wired to an external speed controller. Anyway, the idea was to spin the CD up as fast as the drive could go then make the tray "spring" open, letting go of the disc which would then fly across the room. Sometimes the CD would "launch" but other times it would just stay in the tray after it opened and continue to spin which would scratch up the bottom side. The ones that did fly out would go about two feet then land on the carpet and skitter across the floor. I did get better launches by positioning the drive vertically so the "launched" cd would land on it's edge while spinning and shoot off across the room only to slam into my door and jump 6 feet straight up. Eventually, the CD would weaken to the point with multiple launches that it finally breaks apart on impact. You can easily modify an old CD rom drive to do this; preferably try to find an older 52 or 56X drive made before 2003.
