Default wierd hard drive problem

Hi, my windows files corrupted the other day and i couldnt boot so i had to format and reinstall xp. My disk is an sp1 disk. After the install before i had even installed the drivers for my wireless i got all sorts of wierd adware coming up saying thing like your registry needs fixing, visit www.regfixer.com and ull never see this popup again. So i reinstalled again and the same thing happened.

What the hell?
Also my windows hang for about 5 minutes before booting after it has got past the stage where the blue bar scrolls across.

So i thought it maybe some adware hidden in the hd because formatting doesnt actually remove files does it.

So now im in the process for zeroing my disk but its going to take 5 hours lol.

The popups may be due to windows messenger service (found in services.msc) - see this link for how to turn it off. Also a zero format won't do any harm but sometimes XP just takes a while to load on a new install - dis you have all drivers etc. installed?
EDIT: sorry I always forget to post links with my msg - http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/docs/messagepopup/

SP1 comes with services turned off... it could be that you have a bum SP1 disc, I would download an SP2 or SP3 disc off the internet @ someones house and use that instead, with your own cdkey of course. My friend has a disc that had malware on it--was the wierdest thing ever.

How do i download the sp3 disk and register it with my cd key?

Nah its not the services its definatly some kind of malware becasue it starts before i even connect to the internet and its was hapening like everytime i clicked on something a popup would come up trying to get me to buy things.

Im using my dads pc at the moment while mine is zeroing so i can download the sp3 disk if someone shows me how. Ive got sp3 downloaded but not sure how to make it install at the same time as my windows.

I think odyn meant to download an install disk with XP install files AND sp2 on it, although I could be very wrong as I can't read his mind. Do you have another xp install disk that you could use? (NOT the serial, just the disk) also have you used that xp disk that had malware on it before?

Yeh the problem wasnt the disk, it was my 250gig samsung drive packing in. Ive reinstalled on my 80 gig drive and everythings fine. And as soon as i connect my 250gig everything goes bad again.

Think ill jut buy 2 160gbs in the future and setup a raid 0.

Weird problem, Does the drive fail any SMART tests on speedfan?, have you tried the drive in another PC? is the drive still under warranty?
Glad you found the problem though

Not tried the smart tests. Ill give them a go in a min. If i do get it to work ok again, is there any problems with installing my games no the 250gig even though my windows is installed on the 80? Will it slow loading tiimes down having them on seperate drives?

I would doubt if you would have any problems with your games on that hard drive *provided* it passes the SMART test. Load times may be quicker as the head has to do less seeking around the HDD for windows files/background tasks at the same time as running your game. But the best way to find out is to try.

EDIT: you may also want to do a Samsung diagnostic scan - http://www.samsung.com/global/busine...ort_HUTIL.html (They have too many UTILS for one task on their page but I think thats the right one

Yeh, i just dont fancy installing windows on the drive again if its just going to corrupt everything again lol. Its just formatting now, im giving it a slow ntfs format. My 80gig passed the smart tests with very good on everything though

Ill do the smart tests on the dogy drive when format is done.
