Default Can external Hdds cause cpu spikes?

Well I needed more storage and of course when I asked for a 500gb maxtor hdd for my birthday i didn't specify "internal" but thats another story lol

Ok well this One-Touch 500gb Maxtor deal has this very annoying white LED in the front to signal activity. And when I play movies and music off of it it blinks consistently. (kinda annoying) You can use firewire or usb I don't have a firewire port at the moment so im stuck withs suckfactor usb.

Anyway my cpu usage seems to spike very high quite often and before I had this peice of junk laying on my desk didn't seem to as much.

So basicly I'm asking can usb external hdds create cpu spikes? or anything else that would make my comp a big sluggish?

By the way I have my OS installed on a 40gb WD and all of my programs on a maxtor 120gb.

It seems even when I'm not using files that are on it the activity LED will blink for a few seconds. Doesn't make sense to me but whatever.

Thanks for any input for help.
