As far as I've noticed, the Scyte mounts are pretty effective, but that plastic isn't as flexible as these rubber/elastic bands, so if the rattling is strong enough, there's a chance it gets transmitted to the case. This solution really suppresses all the seek noise and according to "silentpcr.com" it is the best system to quiet a drive.

And I still want quieter . All I want to do is try to make the hard drives (I have 2) seek click sound indistinguishable from the sound the rest of the system makes lol.
This would be the ideal combo: a WD green with low humm and the elastic bands to suppress the seek noise.

Sounds interesting, I would be careful what type of elastic bands people use. Some materials get brittle when exposed to heat over the period of a few months.

About the elastic bands... are they made to last any length of time?

Cause I don't want to risk losing my data again, that would be one hell of a massive heat-attack.

I would rather buy a hard drive silencer box thing, but then again I'm sure I could probably come up with a little mod or something to make sure the hard drive doesn't plummet to it's death.

Try it on, you'll be surprised how effective it can be.

BTW, recently I sold all the 3 Seagate 7200.10 250GB and got a single WD Green 1TB... do I need to say it?

It's quiet, the noise off the HDD is largely covered by the low-vibe humm of the rest of the fans. When seeking the WD Green is as quiet (or loud) as a 5400rpm Fujitsu HDD in my wife's laptop, the WD Green being tested with stock AAM. It can be made even quieter if one increases the AAM setting, but what for?

About the HDD cooling part: the only HDDs that needed the fan running (the 80mm in front of the bay) in order to be under 40°C were: WD Raptor 36GB and Seagate 7200.10 250GB - the version with 2 platters.

About the noise-reducing efficiency
:
  • with HDDs like the Raptors it makes them bearable when seeking, this system can't damp the high-pitch whiiiiim.
  • With the regular Seagate, Hitachi, WD black these rubber bands make the drives sufficiently quiet as to watch a movie without hearing random rattles (even in Vista).
  • If the HDD is @5400 RPM the noise created by the rotation of the platters gets down from 120Hz (7200rpm) to 90Hz (5400rpm) so the whiiiiiim diapears (reference the tests @www.silentpcr.com). The rubber bands take care or the seek noise and you get a HDD as quiet as it gets.

I'd rather buy drive stablizers than have my PC looking ugly like that.

If this looks ugly for you it is possible to make it look less crude but that ruins the $1 price tag.

You'd be surprised to see how well it looks in case less crowded. I have in 5 5.25" bays: 1DVD, 1 fan controller which brings 4+3+3+3+3+2+2 wires and two HDDs on silencers. Most of the ugliness comes from somewhere else than the rubber bands. Also, this solution works 100% of the time, the silencers I doubt it.

This completely ungrounds the HDD from your case, and sends the electrical ground through the sata power connector, which can be very dangerous. Most if not all silencing solutions from major companies have a way to ground a screw hole on the HDD to the case because of this, because the lack of ground can cause drive malfunction.

The SATA connector has ground wires, so whatever comes thru the power cables, goes back thru the ground cables. If you are refering to static electricity, the HDD is a Faraday cage, so the inside can't be affected; the outside, the electronic parts, are grounded thru the SATA connector.

The simplest way to tackle this issue (if there is one) is to tie the end of a wire with a screw on the hdd, and the other end with another screw on the ede of the 5.25". Still, why would that be necesary, I'm pretty curious...
