Hmm. I personally think WD and Seagate are on par with each other. The people saying, "WD or Seagate suck, get the other brand," probably have only had one or two drives from each brand and just got unlucky with the company they now don't like.

I have both WD and Seagate, and I think they are both great, and I will never buy a different brand of HDD.

I'm just curious, and please don't let me interrupt the topic, but: what do you use the space for? You see, I have two 40GB Barracudas (sig rig), and I'm only using 26.9GB total between the two of them.

I mean, what kinds of things take up so much space that you need such a large HDD? I'm not criticizing. I'm only trying to learn.

I have a 320GB RAID0 (2x 160GB), and a 200GB as a backup. I probably have 40GB used on the RAID0 and 10GB on the backup drive. The only reason I don't have smaller HDDs is because the two 160GBs in the RAID0 were $60 each and 80GBs were $50 each, so for $10 more I got double the space. The 200GB I already had.

I currently own 12 hdd's ranging from 80 to 500 gigs
from maxtor, WD, Seagate, one is a lacie External drive.

only one had failed and it is only partially failed, the bearings are going bad in the mother so it squeals like no other, it is a WD oddly enough it is the only drive I have ever had that was mounted on its side.

has this stopped me from buying WD NO.

4 of the 12 drives are WD's one being the squeeler. then there are 6 seagates and 2 maxtors,

I usually purchase Hard drive by whats on sale (a good deal) and what has good performance, I have never had a samsung but if the price was right I would pick one up.

I say if you stay with the more well known manufactures you should be good.

Yeah, running HDDs on their sides long-term is bad for them.

5chesse, all that space is obviously used for mass storage of pr0n, duh! i haven't had any hard luck with either WD or S, but as i've said the WD run just as fast as the S AND quieter

What? The case for my sig rig holds them on their side!! They've been that way for over a few years!

The mere thought that this is bad for them makes me uncomfortable....

I've owned about 8 pc's in my life and I've had three hard drives go bad. Friends and family of mine have also had drives go bad. They were all WD's. I know that doesn't qualify as a controlled study, but I simply don't trust the build quality of WD's. The WD's that I had that didn't go completely bad seemed to develop bad sectors. The few seagates that I have owned have lasted forever and have run flawlessly. Also, I know someone who has to destroy hard drives for a local hospital and he says he has a lot harder of a time destroying the seagates. I know it's hearsay but you take it for what it's worth.
