Well, you have a choice there and I would go for the Seagate. I have had a seagate HDD for over 4yrs now and has never ever gave me trouble of any sort. Now am building a new rig and since I need lots of space, I bought 2*1TB Seagate 7200.11 About these, there was only one issue about them that the PC would not recognize the right cache size and thus an update to the firmware was to be made. Now if you look here you see the models that need to have a firmware update. At least mine were OK

Well, I went with the Seagate 7200.11 - 1TB drive myself. They had it on sale at the local Fry's for $235. Seemed like a good deal.

Just curious. I went to the link you provided me. It says no action is required if you have the following models:

ST31000340AS

750 GB
ST3750330AS

500 GB
ST3500320AS

Did you get the ES version of the 1TB drive? Also, how did you notice that your drive was not fully utilizing all the cache?

Good to hear that you went witht the Seagate 1TB.

No, I bought the AS one, the ES version where more expensive then the AS but perfom as such.

I haven't yet used them since I still need to wait for the mobo, vga and cpu to arrive/be released.

Now with regards to the cache, when I was searching to buy the HDD I did some search on the net and found out that some HDD were showing the wrong cache size. So I still bought them and took the risk. Thankfully when they arrived since I could not test them I saw the firmware and was not one and thus mine should both show the right size. I read it here and might help you more.

I guess that is where I am confused. According to the first link you provided to Seagate's website, if you have the AS model, it's recommended that you update the firmware. However, then they follow it up with the next quote:

"If the drive bears one of the model numbers above then NO action is required."

A bit confusing. I guess I need to call Seagate and get the firmware update.

There is no need to call them IMO, if you HDD does not state that has the following firmware, than you do not have to worry about.
