Samsung, WD or Seagate? - Overclock.net

I need either a 750GB or 1TB drive. I'm looking at the either the new Samsung Spinpoint series, WD SE 16 series, or the the 7200.11 series from Seagate.

I know I should take reviews from Newegg with a grain of salt, but I'm bit concerned by numerous number of posts stating failures and DOA for all 3 manufacturers.

Can I get some feedback from the OCN community? I won't sacrifice reliability for performance.

I and my friends have had the greatest failure rate with Seagate drives, and the least with Western Digital.

Coincidence? I think not.

Possibly not. I did notice a lesser trend in failures with WD in the Newegg reviews. Tomshardware charts show the Seagate 7200.11 outperforming the WD drives in most categories. However, I might have to still go with WD.

Wait a second here. I have two 40GB Seagate Barracudas. I've had one of them for at LEAST 5 years. Probably 7! The other? I don't know. Maybe a year less. Either way, these things still perform just as quietly and as flawlessly as if I had just taken them out of the box.

But with the WD Caviars I have owned, they were nothing but trouble. They'd work just fine for the first several months, but they would progressively get louder and louder. Sooner or later, they'd begin clicking. And then I'd replace it.

One 8.4GB Caviar lasted me a while. All the way to a 30GB replacement for $89.99 (just to give you an idea of how modern 30GB was). That thing died after like 3 months.

Is WD the new Seagate or what's going on here?

I'm more concerned about the newer series in the 750GB to 1TB range. It just seems these higher capacity drives are failing or showing up DOA more than the lower capacity drives.

ill say that at least with notebook hard drives it seems that seagate has a tendency to fail a little more. then again, the toshiba hard drives fail all the time, constantly.

Oh, whew. I'm going with a 250GB Seagate, so I guess I can still trust it to last like my 40's!

Our company uses seagate and WD. In our case, WD is going better than seagate in desktop as well server especially the RE2 series.

Generally I go in this order.

WD, Seagate , Samsung

If you ask me Seagate and WD are pretty much on par with eachother.

For me, I have yet to experience a hard drive failure. And it goes back to the days where a 200MB hard drive was the highest capacity drives around. Of course, I only bought about 10 drives in the past 15-18 years. Maybe because I never had a drive fail on me other than getting some bad sectors.

That is why I'm more concerned with these reports of what seems like a high failure rate on the new high capacity drives.
