I have a desktop that I use as a server. It's got an Abit IL9 Pro Motherboard. I want to run 2 500GB HD's in RAID1. Do I need an expansion raid controller or would the onboard RAID be sufficient?

I don't see why the onboard RAID isn't sufficient.
Edit, Oh dear, there is no onboard RAID controller so yes you'll need a seperate one. Quote:

Like your Graphics Card, anything not on-board is much better than on-board hardware. But for basic RAID, on-board is sufficient.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16816855002 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16816129011 Actually much cheaper than the last time I looked. edit: MjrTom posted a small review of an XFX card he got. Look at the first link I posted and go to page 2. It seems OK for the price. edit: I am new to RAID and have never used a card, so there may be someone that knows more and can tell you if there is an issue with getting a cheap card or if there is a big difference in speeds and such. Just go for the cheapest Card you can find.
__________________RAID1 is not really hard and a RAID Card without Onboard-Processor won't stress your CPU much much for it. Good RAID Controller Cards are just to expansive to be worth it (for private use).
