Ok,

I have 2x 250gb hd's, portable, in external enclosures. Usb, ATA

Question is,

Fiance gave me an ancient tower, probably windows 98, dunno. Old hd in it, she still wants stuff off it.

Question...

There's like virtual pc, and stuff.

But the harddrive (forget the size) is ata, so I can put it inside the enclosure, however, it's already got a boot sector, etc, It's not a data drive, but has an opperating system, etc.

Can I "use" virtual pc, or something similar, (doesn't matter the program, just need one...). to, "boot" the drive into a virtual pc thing, and "network" with my laptop, or "external usb things" and just work? I just want to get probably a few gb's off it for my fiance.

Any help would be very very much appreciated!

I know you can with VMWare - not sure about Virtual PC. In VMWare, you can set up to use a physical disk, so in this case, you can set it to use the external drive and boot from there.
