So, I have a 200GB Internal Seagate drive that is used as my system drive. It is connected to SATA Port 0. Recently, I bought a 500GB WD Caviar to use an internal storage drive. It is connected to SATA Port 1.
__________________I formatted the 500GB WD using Disk Management, made 1 primary partition, the partition is NOT active. For some reason though, when I go to Disk Management, it shows my main system drive as being "Disk 1", while my secondary storage drive is "Disk 0". Same thing happens when I go to install Windows XP, in the XP setup it shows my 500GB Storage drive as being Drive C:\. How can I "swap" these drives and make it so that my smaller system drive is shown as Disk 0. I would of thought it would of been Disk 0 by default since it's plugged into SATA Port 0 but that doesn't seem to be the case. Thanks in advance everyone, I appreciate any replies. ![]()

See if you can change the hard drive order around in BIOS.

Changed it as much as I could. Under the BOOT tab in my BIOS I have the following settings:
__________________Hard Disk Drives: 1st Drive [SM-ST3200822AS] 2nd Drive [PS-WDC WD5000AAKS-00YG] 3rd Drive [WD 1600JB External 010] and I have the Boot Device Priority as follows: Boot Device Priority: 1st Boot Device [3M-SONY DVD RW DW-D22A] 2nd Boot Device [SM-ST32008AS] With the 500GB WD not even being a Boot Device option, so everything seems fine there. Under the Advanced Tab and "Drive Configuration" though it shows this: Drive Configuration: [SATA PORT-0 : NOT DETECTED] [SATA PORT-2 : WDC WD5000AAKS-00YGA0] [SATA PORT-1 : ST32008AS] [SATA PORT-3 : NOT DETECTED] I cannot change the order under Drive Configuration and I have no idea why my computer INSISTS on putting my 500GB Storage drive ahead of my System Drive. Even though the System Drive is on SATA PORT-1.

So it says your 500gb drive is C, is your OS still on the other drive though? (drive d or e?) If so, disconnect your new drive then format/reinstall the OS on your 200gig drive. Once the OS is installed then connect the 500gig drive. I had a problem similar to this, the xp boot files were placed on the larger drive for some reason and the rest of the OS was placed on the drive I selected it to be on.

Thanks Shoot2thrill, I found out that the boot files (NTDETECT.COM, etc) were on the Storage drive, I removed them and then my System Drive started showing up as C:.
__________________That's only half the problem though, because the system drive is still showing up as Drive 1 and my storage drive is showing up as Drive 0. I don't understand why it's like this even though I have my system drive plugged into the first SATA Port as you see in Post #3 where I copied down all the info from the BIOS. Hopefully someone can help me "Swap" the Disk numbers though so my main drive will start showing up as Disk 0 instead of Disk 1. Thanks again for the help thus far.

Did you try disconnecting the 500 gig drive to see if your main drive still shows up as disk 1?
If it shows up as disk 0 then try connecting the 500 gig drive again to see if it stays 0 or if it switches again.

Not sure what it was that made it work, when I unplugged my system drive I plugged it into SATA Port 0 this time instead of SATA Port 1, so maybe that made a difference. Or it could of been that my old XP installation was messed up, I don't think it had loaded the drivers for my new drive properly. Eitherway I'm very glad it's finally resolved. Many thanks to you shoot2thrill for helping me through this, I greatly appreciate it. ![]()
