Default Why only 4 partitions

Why is it, that on a conventional single drive, you can only have 4 partitions?

You can only have 4 primary partitions. Logical or extended partitions can be more. It is just a limitation of current PC architecture.

Because the partition table in the MBR can only hold 4 entries. It's an artifact of the original design. If you need more partitions, create 1-3 primary and 1 extended partition. In the extended partition, you can create as many logical drives as needed. Here are some links explaining the issue further:
