My dad has a 500 Gig Western Digital external Hard Drive. He gave it to me asking if i could get the data off of it. I took it out of the enclosure and hooked it up to my computer via SATA. I turn the computer on and i hear a clicking noise for a couple seconds and then it stopped. Bios does not detect the HDD. I tried using the Lifeguard tools that WD has, but no luck.
__________________Next thing i was gona try was a program that someone told me about called Knoppix. Its a Linux OS that can be booted from CD and has some nice Data recovery tools. I have never used it so i was wondering if anyone has some info that might help me with that. If that doesnt work i also read somewhere that putting the HDD in the freezer overnight might get it to work for 15 minutes or so. That hopefully is all the time i need to grab all the data off of it. Any advice or info about anything that could help?

If you are hearing a clicking it is probably a bearing or read/write head issue. The freezer method works well in most cases. You could also try doing a hot swap.
How valuable is the data on the actual drive? There are companies that can recover data from dead drives, but it is very costly.

I had that before with a HDD. My PC woulnd't boot and the HDD was making a horrid sound.
That PC is long gone, but what's the freezer method?

pop the hdd in the freezer for about an hour, take the drive and get the info off of it very quickly - the drive wont last.

Standard method is to put the drive in an air tight zip lock bag for a few hours and let it cool. You'll get a short period of time when the drive may work due to the 'chill' factor.
It's worked wonders many a time. ![]()
