Default do my hdd's really need cooling?

hi there everyone, ive seen a lot of hdd coolers around, but never really had and problems (that im aware of lol) with heat from my drives. is ths a problem should be aware of, or are the hard drve coolers just a waste of time and money? cheers for your responses

As long as your hard drives are in a semi-open spot in your case, or you have a minimal amount of air flow on them they should be fine. You don't need to go spend money on fans for them unless you are getting them for the bling factor or you are having a problem with them running too hot.

Situations where you need active cooling on hard drives:
1. 2 Raptors stuck together running in raid0
2. Multiple hard drives stuck together in some sort of raid function
3. If there is poor airflow in general
4. If your hard drives are above 45C

45c? wow that's hot... how does one determine the temperature of a hdd? internal or external? except for #4, good response.

edit: where did you learn that 45c for a hdd is too hot? is that dependent on the manufacturer specifications, or the rpm's of the hdd, or what?

HDTune will also. I'm not sure how accurate it is, but I feel comfortable trusting it.
