Default need to reformat how do i save the files

Alright, I've got another computer that I need to get up and running again, so I'm going to just reformat the hard drive to make it easier..

But Windows will not load.. So how can I save the files or keep them from being reformatted?

Boot into a Live CD of Linux. Knoppix or even Ubuntu's Live CD will do what you need. All you have to do is boot into the Live CD (set it in BIOS to boot to disc), mount your drive, and copy and paste to an external drive.

Take the HDD and stick it in an enclosure and take it out that way. Or hook the drive up to the machine and copy everything you want off of it that way. Or you can use a Live CD of Linux like Ubuntu, Kubuntu, I think even Mandriva has a live version.

So if I connected that hard drive to this computer I wouldn't be able to simply take off the files i wanted? I would have to install one of those other things?

If you put your other drive into a different computer, you should be able to browse to it and copy and paste.

The only problem you might have is if you had a password and your had set your files as private, if you didnt you can just plug the drive into the working computer then copy the files. If you did password protect and set the files to private then you will need to log in as the administrator account and take ownership of the files.

Yeah, didn't think about that. Another issue might be if you used BitLocker or TrueCrypt or some other type of encryption software for total encryption of your drive. If not, then you should be golden.

If you're running XP like in your sig, you should be able to. You may have to use Knoppix instead though. If it doesn't work after slapping it into the other comp, you may try Knoppix and mount your good Win partition. Then, just copy and paste over.
