Default scan disk for bad sectors in windows

i don't have access to the internet on my laptop at the moment so i can't get any software that will scan for bad sectors. is there a way to do it using only pre-installed windows software?

i'm at work at the moment, that's why i can type this. there's no way to transfert files from the work computer to my laptop.

thanks but it don't seem to work. when i start it, it does 2 or 3 steps really fast, and on the next one (3 or 4) it stays at 0%. i let it run for a good 10 minutes, but since i didn't see any progress i closed the window and did something else. i'll probably be able to get something else from the internet when i get home.

so, again, thanks for the help.

That's normal. I've had a scan take upwards of 3hrs before. Also make sure you use the "Run" option in the Start menu not the command prompt.

Yeah with a big hard drive you won't see any progress for a while, just check to see that the HDD light is on and you'll know its working.

i should've mentionned that it is and external hard drive, 250gb. well, it's a hard drive that i bought and i put it in an enclosure, and i run it via USB.

i'll re-do it when i get back, just before i go to bed, let it run while i sleep.

Oh Ok. I'm sure you already know this but make sure to type the correct drive letter for the external drive. So it would be chkdsk [drive letter:] /f /r. I only re stated the instructions to make sure we're on the same page.
