Default Need input on velociraptor.

I am in the middle of building my g/f's high performance rig and I had only ordered her the:

WD 640GB AAKS

I am possibly wanting to get her an OS drive like the velociraptor 150GB b/c the 300GB is too expensive and then use the 640GB as a document/music drive.

Would this be a smarter choice over the 150GB Raptor drives? Are the velociraptors faster and quieter?

I have the 300gb Velociraptor and I havent noticed any more usual sound than normal. I dual boot and use my velo for everything. It is amazingly fast. Defrags are a breeze. but your idea is a good and sound decision. especially for a girl that is gonna have alot of music and a million pictures.. but the velo 300 is amazingly quiet since it is a 2 1/2 drive in 3 1/4 heat sink

Let me put it this way - the WD6400AAKS performs faster than the 3.5" raptors in all real world applications (due to its denser platters). You would be better off buying a second one of those instead of the raptors. But the velociraptors are still faster than either one.

So if you don't mind paying the premium then sure, go for a VR. But if you decide its too expensive, a WD6400AAKS is a pretty decent boot drive as well. Just don't get the original raptors.

Sounds good, looks like so far I will be going for the smaller 150GB Velociraptor...

Unless anyone else has any comments.

Well, this: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...OEM%20(HD103UJ) Believe it or not it's actually faster than a Raptor X and has like more than 5 times the space. And is a lot cheaper.

That HD is fast but you can't really trust it. Read the reviews on Newegg.

I'd stick with the Seagate that has a faster access time and a cheaper price than the Samsung. In my opinion your girl should be good with the first drive you brought already. I doubt she'll need anything more than that 640 gig WD.

well I have both a Seagate 500GB 32MB cache HDD and a 74GB Raptor. I use the Raptor as my OS drive and have a few games on it. Now I had my OS on the 500GB HDD a few months back and in all honesty they are nearly the same. most wouldnt be able to tell the difference in load times. they are both great hard drives though.

That's because even though the raptor has a lower average seek time, the data is more spread out. Benchmarks test the seek time by seeking to random spots all over the hard drive and seeing how long it takes - real world applications rarely need to seek that far across the platter so often.

Higher density platters mean that each file takes up a smaller amount of surface area, and therefore are located much closer to each other. High density platters like those used in the WD640AAKS (320GB/platter) are over 4 times larger than the Raptor's (depends on the model, but usually 74GB/platter) - and therefore files are positioned 4 times as close to each other and take up 4 times less space than on a Raptor. Yes the raptor may outperform it in some (rare) situations, such as defragging, but in general use the extra RPMs don't make up for what its lacking.
