Arrow [FAQ] Never Use Your Flash Drive Normally Again!!!!

Mods: If you rather this be in another section, move it

Most of you probably use your USB flash drives normally. You know, start>my computer>USB>Whatever you want. But i don't believe in doing things normally. So i found something that helps me use my flash drive luxuriously. And, while i was at it, i thought i'd share it. So here's the thing. This tool allows you to basically run programs and documents and everything, right off your USB. No install needed on the PC. Bring it around wherever you want, but do it differently. Here's how:

1) Go to PortableApps.com and download it. It may take awhile to download, it usually downloads from SourceForge.

2) When it's done downloading, make sure you have the flash drive in your USB port. Install it to the USB drive. Should be default.

3) When done, it may start automatically, may not. If not, go to Start > My Computer > [flash drive] > StartPortableApps.exe.

A little red window should appear at the lower right corner of your screen. From here, you may launch any program you have on your thumb drive. The suite comes with Firefox, Thunderbird, Openoffice, and many more, but you can install many more by visiting the website. Even GiMP is available. You can open the documents and save them to there, it's all there. Like a mini windows. You can launch it after you minimize it by double clicking the little circlular arrow on the taskbar

And best of all, it's open source.

I found this awhile ago and thought i'd share it. Enjoy!!

-Mike

Good advice, and really helpful for people who have to use computers other than their own a lot. Also, with the ever decreasing price of flash memory it'll become more and more useful to people.

I've been using PortableApps for a while (at least a year) on my flash drive and it's great, thanks for bringing this up so more people will know about it's awesomeness!

I use Portable Apps myself and I think it's pretty damn awesome. It allows me to use Firefox instead of IE on my school's computer (they don't allow you to install software).

Ditto i once had the librarian come up to me and try to kick me off for installing stuff and i was like "uh, can you tell me what i installed?" i explained it was running off a flash drive and then she shut up and that allows me to get around the filters too.

Portable VLC is the best when it comes to computers that are so restricted they won't allow you to play movies. Portable Open Office is also a must have. I have a 8 gig flash drive I keep on my key chain now.
