Default Partitioning question.

So, I want to make a new partition to install my win 7 beta test on but I only have one hard drive. My roommates claim that partitioning the drive that my OS is on is asking for something bad to happen. Is this true? How would I safely partition an active hard drive? Thanks in advance.

no, it's fine to shrink your current partition and make a new one.

you can use gparted to do it.

yeah, i do it all the time, it will shrink the partition you currently have the OS on, then you can make a new one for win 7, then when you boot into your current OS, it will run chkdsk to make sure it knows where all your files are. after that everything should be fine.

From what I've been told, if you make it do a dual boot, then the process should be quite smooth and you'll have no problems.

Ok, thanks I gave it a try but I can't actually use the Vista built in thing, it doesn't let me do anything beyond 3.3GBs of shrinkage. I got Acronis but not sure what to do with it. Any suggestions?

like someone above said, use gparted.

download the .iso, burn it to a CD, and boot with the CD. then just arrange your partitions the way you want them and go from there.

I know I might be alittle annoying with this, but you're telling me not to use Acronis? Ok then how do i get an iso to work, because I've never had one work properly that wasn't virtually mounted.

Disable Hibernation, Pagefile, and System Restore. Reboot and use JKdefrag to see if you can clear up more space. I had the same issue with installing my dual boot of Win7/Vista (now Vista/Fedora10).
