Default Raid 0/1 setup. Opinions plz!

Hey all,

My new build will be done next week (awaiting q9550 arrival)- I've never had any experience with RAID setups so I'm new to how it all works. Anyway, I plan on using the P5Q's onboard controller and here is my theoretical setup:

- 2 identical WD 640gb raptors with dual partitions

PARTITION #1 will be RAID 0 - the "**** you can lose" setup, mainly for the OS, and apps.

PARTITION #2 will be RAID 1 - utilizing raid 1 for storage use only.

Will this work? Opinions/suggestions?

If i understand correctly what you're asking you cant partion a drive to work in a different type of raid, however if you want PERFORMANCE go with raid 0 64kb or 128kb block and best part of raid 0 is its fast as hell and 640 x2 = 1280GB minus the os ect

When you build the array you will decide either RAID 0 or 1. Then you will install the OS on it. I don't think you can make part of the drive 1 form of RAID and another part a different RAID. You would have to build 2 different arrays and 1 would cancel out the other. Not totally positive, but pretty sure.
Your manual has a great section on how to set up a RAID array. It has all the screens you will see when setting it up. I'd suggest that's where you should start.

Agreed the manual is nice. I've looked it over numerous times. But, I've been mulling this idea over because someone suggested it. Unknowingly, I assumed it was possible. +REP

I would probably run the Raid0 on the two 640gb drives, then when you have the money buy another drive for storage, or do what I did, and use your old drives for backup.

Im using my two old 160gb drives for backup while I wait for money to buy another 640gb for storage. I prefer using an extra drive to a RAID1 setup for the following two reasons.

1- If you delete something..its deleted on both drives. If I were to accidentally delete something and need it later, it will be on my backup drive (documents/music/video etc.) In a raid this file will just be deleted twice.
2-System errors due to virus/worm whatever will be on both drives.
