I have 4 7200.9 400gb seagates in raid 0, and was wondering if I am maxing out my controller (onboard)
here are the drive specs Maybe just having two would be good enough? I know loading games, and installing software right now with 4 drives is SUPER fast. Any thoughts?

What speeds are you getting? Depending on that then you may use just 2 and be fine.

I guess I would need to install on my 300gb for now then do a speed test on the raid arry....
with an OS installed on it, and doing a test I only saw 101Mb/s

Download and run HD Tune. What speeds are you getting?
This is what I get with 2 of the same drive and the onboard NV controller.

The highest benchmark I could find for NVIDIA RAID has it doing 400MB/s.... so it can do at least that.

with a fastTrak 4310 PCI raid controller I am getting between 101.5-105.3Mb/s avg thats with all four drives.
![]() ![]() Seems very low for almost $500 worth of hard drives. I even turned on write-buffer with the same results. gonna plug them onboard and see what happens

maybe consider getting a raid controller for a lil boost

Once you hit 4 drives in RAID0, then you are seriously pushing the line of diminishing returns. Not to mention the more drives you have in RAID0, the more a chance you have of system failure. I'd think of RAID5 maybe or just split your data into RAID0 and RAID1.

if anything I would do raid 10, not 5. Its faster. Well I wont know till tomorrow if the onboard is faster than the raid card I tried because my pc wont load (bsod) after taking the raid card out.
Then I tried to reload it and none of my raid drivers are working, which is very strange, and was starting to really piss me off.......so I'm gonna watch some code geass, or however you spell it, reload it tomorrow and see if the drives are faster using the onboard contoller. I'll try raid 10 also, but I have never had a system failure due to my raid config, plus I keep my data on another 750GB eSata drive......being redundant is of no value to me, only speed.

I have 4 in RAID0 and yes it's fast, but I think I'm going to take one off and add it to my RAID5 array........I am never going to fill 1.76 TB of data for the OS and temp downloads, and I don't trust RAID0 enough to store my media.
After looking at the results I see that the numbers are very low......it may be that RAID with NV SBs really suck. What sort of speeds do you get with 2 drives? 1? My WD Caviar 500GBs (not super fast drives mind you) I get 150min, 319 max, 250 avg with 11.1ms access on my PERC. Granted there should be some increase for the controller, but not really that much. I would make sure that the controller is functioning properly, as it seems that the results are a bit low. If you can spare $75 you might want to grab a Perc 5 controller on ebay.........they're awesome for the price. Mine handles my 4 drive RAID0 and 4 drive RAID5 like a champ. It only takes ~1 hour to rebuild the RAID5 array when I disconnect a drive (purposely simulate failure.)
