Default downsizing a 1tb seagate to 300gb

I read in the hardware news that the 1tb 7200.12 Seagate when downsized to 300Gb would perform similar to a raptor. Is this true ? should I do it ? or could I down size my 640gb wd and get similar performance increase ? opinions suggestions, I'm open to them

This is the link http://www.techwarelabs.com/seagate_1-5tb-mod/ of a comparison between a downsized Seagate 1.5TB 7200.11 and a Velociraptor. The Seagate is winning in all tests except the access time (the raptor is a 10k rpm).

Every HD is faster when is using the first tracks. If you use only it, you can obtain an higher speed than the average speed of the whole disk. It's called "short stroking" and you can find a lot of informations in the thread http://www.overclock.net/hard-drives-storage/.

7200.12 is already faster but it has almost double access time.

It's called Short Stroking... and there are dozens of posts about it under the storage and news sections.

Beat me to it..

I doubt that a 1TB Seagate will out perform a raptor, I could be wrong but don't expect a lot more performance from it, maybe 20MB/s at most.

You don't get more sequential performance from short stroking. You only get higher average sequential rates since you can only benchmark the faster sections of the disk.

The purpose of short-stroking is better access times.

640 Black with a 500 Black. Both are very similar in speed so decided to raid them and short stroke them to 250Gb
Using a external hard drive as a storage drive
